The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in a bid to ensure safe and smooth travel across Nigeria during the upcoming Sallah celebration, has launched a nationwide operational initiative.

As part of this effort, the Corps has deployed a substantial workforce comprising 36,000 personnel—including both regular and special marshals.

The deployment also includes a robust fleet of 750 patrol vehicles, 120 ambulances, over 200 motorcycles, and 25 tow trucks, all strategically stationed to bolster road safety measures throughout the festive period.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, who emphasized the Corps’ commitment to ensuring a safe travel experience for all road users during the holiday season.

Ogungbemide noted that the operational deployment aims to achieve several key objectives. These include maintaining the free flow of traffic, providing rapid response in the event of emergencies, ensuring timely clearance of road obstructions, and reducing road traffic crashes through enhanced surveillance and patrol activities. He also highlighted the Corps’ ongoing public enlightenment campaigns as a vital tool in sensitizing motorists to safe driving practices.

To further reinforce these measures, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has issued a directive to commanding officers across the country, mandating them to maintain strict oversight over 52 designated traffic corridors during the operation. These corridors are identified as critical routes with high vehicular movement and accident risks, particularly during festive periods.

According to Ogungbemide, the FRSC has also mobilized specialized operational tools and technology to support field officers. Among these are radar guns and breathalysers, which will be used to detect speeding and intoxicated driving respectively. Additionally, the Corps has ensured full deployment of necessary logistics and support materials to facilitate the success of this nationwide operation.

In preparation for any emergencies, all Zebra units—FRSC’s specialized emergency response teams—have been activated. The Corps Marshal has instructed that these units remain fully responsive and adhere to the minimum response time protocols when handling crash incidents or distress calls.

Furthermore, Ogungbemide issued a stern reminder to motorists, urging them to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and to cooperate fully with FRSC personnel as well as other law enforcement agencies throughout the holiday. He warned that Mobile Courts would be operational during the festive period and would promptly prosecute traffic offenders.

He stressed that special attention will be given to the enforcement of key traffic violations, including but not limited to: dangerous driving or overtaking, use of mobile phones while driving, overloading, excessive speeding, lane indiscipline and route violations, lack of passenger manifest, improper latching of goods, and the illegal use of SPY number plates.

Through this comprehensive safety strategy, the FRSC aims not only to protect lives and property but also to ensure that the joyous occasion of Sallah is marked by safety, order, and responsible road usage across the nation.
