The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 49-year-old woman, identified as Mrs. Joy Temitope, for the alleged abduction of a two-month-old baby in the Koko area of the state.
The incident, which initially occurred three months ago, has drawn significant public attention due to the disturbing nature of the crime.
According to a statement released on Monday, June 2, by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, the suspect reportedly lured a 20-year-old mother under false pretenses before allegedly drugging her and absconding with her infant son. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was left unconscious after being administered an unknown substance by the suspect.
“The suspect, Mrs. Joy Temitope, aged 49, cunningly deceived a young woman—just 20 years old—who was caring for her two-month-old baby,” SP Edafe stated. “After gaining the victim’s trust, she drugged the mother and stole the child in Koko, Delta State.”
Following the incident, the police launched a discreet and intelligence-led investigation aimed at locating both the suspect and the missing child. Months of tracking and surveillance paid off when law enforcement officers finally apprehended Temitope.
“Thanks to intelligence-driven policing, the suspect was arrested three months after the crime was committed,” Edafe added. “The baby boy, now five months old, was successfully rescued and has since been reunited with his biological mother.”
The arrest and subsequent rescue highlight the importance of coordinated intelligence and persistence in handling sensitive child abduction cases. Authorities have commended the officers involved in the operation and reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of children and vulnerable members of society.
The Delta State Police Command has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when dealing with strangers, and to report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement agencies without delay.
