The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the arrest of 36 individuals suspected of drug abuse and trafficking, as part of a sweeping operation ahead of the upcoming Eid-El-Kabir festivities.
The command said the arrests were made during a series of coordinated raids in high-risk areas across the state, including Makabartar Dan’agundi, Kwari, Kofar Na’isa, and Kano Line.
These locations were identified as hotspots for drug activity and were targeted as part of efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment during the Sallah celebrations.
Confirming the development, NDLEA spokesperson Sadiq Muhammad explained that the operations led to the recovery of a wide variety of illicit substances. These included cannabis sativa, “suck and die”, diazepam, rubber solution, and other illegal narcotics commonly abused by youths and vulnerable groups.
“In a coordinated effort to ensure a drug-free and peaceful Eid-El-Kabir celebration, NDLEA operatives carried out intelligence-led raids across key areas of Kano. As a result, 36 suspects were apprehended, and large quantities of various illicit drugs were seized,” Muhammad stated.
He reaffirmed the command’s ongoing commitment to combatting the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking, not only during the festive season but throughout the year.
Speaking on behalf of the agency’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the State Commander, CN AI Ahmad, commended the officers involved in the successful operations and emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance.
“The NDLEA will not relent in its mission to rid Kano State of drug-related activities. We urge all residents to celebrate responsibly and avoid any form of engagement in the drug trade or consumption,” Commander Ahmad said.
He further extended warm Eid wishes to the people of Kano, encouraging them to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious behavior that may jeopardize public safety during the festive period.
The NDLEA also reiterated that its surveillance and enforcement activities would continue beyond Eid, with a view to protecting communities and fostering a healthier, drug-free society.
