Following the successful conclusion of the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed the Gateway Games 2024, the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Uyi Akpata, has commended Ogun State for its pioneering twin oval at the MKO Sports Arena in Abeokuta and its stellar hosting of the event. Akpata announced plans for the NCF to partner with the state government to bring more cricket action to the region.
Speaking at the close of the cricket events, Akpata expressed delight at the twin oval, a rare feature in Africa, positioning Ogun State as a strong contender for future national and regional cricket tournaments. He praised the state government for a well-executed festival and the athletes for their high-spirited performances, while giving special recognition to the Ogun State Cricket Association, led by Mr. Dare Kuforiji, for the remarkable achievement of the twin oval.
“Having a twin oval dedicated to cricket in the stadium is exciting. It’s a rare feat, with only a few available across Africa. The Ogun State government has a clear advantage, and the NCF is eager to collaborate with them and the state cricket association to elevate these pitches to international standards and host more competitions here,” Akpata said.
Highlighting the NCF’s focus on sustainable partnerships, Akpata emphasized that the federation cannot work alone but sees Ogun State as a viable partner, given its provision of land, interest, and support, coupled with the state cricket association’s experienced personnel. “Cricket is in safe hands in Ogun State,” he noted.
Akpata revealed that a verbal memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been established with the Ogun State Cricket Association. “Once I consult my board to formalize the MOU, we’ll address development needs, including appointing professional curators to maintain the facility. Our track record shows 100% improvement in maintenance wherever we’ve partnered,” he added.
He concluded that Ogun State is now a prime candidate to host upcoming regional and national cricket events, hinting that the PwC U17 finals could take place in Abeokuta once discussions with key stakeholders are finalized.
