The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a full-scale investigation into the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 22 members of the Kano State contingent. The victims were returning to Kano after participating in the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
During a condolence visit to the Kano State Government, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed deep sorrow over the incident. The visit was made on Monday, and he was represented by the Zonal Commander of Zone 1, Assistant Corps Marshal Ahmad Umar.
In his remarks, the Corps Marshal emphasized that the location of the accident has long been recognized as a high-risk zone for fatal road traffic incidents. “That particular spot is quite notorious for being prone to deadly crashes,” he noted.
According to the Corps Marshal, road traffic accidents are not mere occurrences but are usually the result of identifiable and preventable factors. “We in the FRSC believe that road crashes do not happen by chance. They are caused by specific issues which, if properly addressed, can significantly reduce such tragedies,” he said.
Highlighting the proactive steps being taken, he explained that part of the FRSC’s statutory mandate includes researching the causes of road accidents and providing practical solutions or policy recommendations to relevant authorities.
“We have already commenced a thorough investigation into both the immediate and underlying causes of this accident,” he added. “Our findings and recommendations will be shared not only with FRSC headquarters but also with the Kano State Government to help prevent future occurrences of such catastrophic events.”
The Corps Marshal reiterated the FRSC’s unwavering commitment to public education on road safety, proper road use, and traffic discipline. He extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State, especially the families of the deceased and those injured in the crash.
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Gwarzo, expressed profound gratitude to the FRSC for the visit and their show of solidarity. He described the incident as both shocking and heartbreaking, particularly given the youth and promise of the lives lost.
Governor Yusuf further acknowledged the repeated dangers of the accident-prone location. He said the government is fully committed to taking every possible measure to prevent such disasters in the future.
“For any location—within or outside the city—that is considered a death trap, we urge the FRSC and the public not to hesitate in bringing it to the government’s attention. It is a shared responsibility we must all rise to,” he asserted.
He also commended the FRSC’s concern and the symbolic importance of their visit, saying it reflects their genuine empathy for the bereaved families and the entire Kano State community.
