The Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State chapter, Comrade Mrs. Funmi Sessy, has emphasized the importance of transitioning from confrontational union practices to more strategic and informed engagements.
She made this call during a two-day capacity-building workshop organized for the executive members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Lagos Chapter. The training, which took place within the premises of the Lagos State House of Assembly, carried the theme: “The Role of Unionism in a Political Environment.”
In her address, Comrade Sessy highlighted that unionism in today’s context requires a thoughtful, knowledge-driven approach. “It’s no longer about being aggressive. Strategy and informed dialogue are the tools we need,” she remarked.
She further explained that such workshops are essential in equipping union leaders with the necessary skills and understanding to operate effectively in politically influenced institutions.
Acknowledging the support of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and the Clerk, Barr. Onafeko Olakekan, she expressed gratitude for their encouragement of the workshop.
She also called for the continuation of regular training sessions to ensure PASAN members remain up to date and competent in their roles, comparable to their peers in other parts of the state.
The event was graced by notable personalities, including Mrs. Adenike Oshinowo, Deputy Clerk; Mrs. Kemi Quadri, Director of Finance; Princess Jumoke Sotonwa, Director of Training; and Mrs. Branco Adekoya Abisola, Director of Public Affairs.
In his remarks, the Chairman of PASAN Lagos Chapter, Mr. Babatunde Ogunlana, reiterated the importance of executive members understanding their duties within the unique framework of a political institution.
He emphasized the need to reflect on the union’s role during the events of January 13 at the Assembly, describing it as a significant reference point for the objectives of the workshop.
