The global perspective on traditional healing methods has shifted significantly. Therefore, our local practitioners must continue to refine and modernize their practice to meet global standards
A call for increased investment in research and development of herbal treatments has been made by Mr. Gbolahan Ogunleye, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikorodu Constituency I under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He made this appeal on Saturday during a donation event held at the Traditional Medicine Practitioners of Nigeria (TMPN) Secretariat in Ikorodu.
At the event, Ogunleye donated tables and chairs to the Ikorodu branch of the TMPN as part of efforts to support the operational capacity of the association.
While presenting the items, the lawmaker emphasized the growing global recognition of traditional medicine and the need for Nigeria’s practitioners to elevate their standards to align with international best practices.
“Traditional medicine practitioners are no longer seen as mere herbalists, unlike in the past. The global perspective on traditional healing methods has shifted significantly. Therefore, our local practitioners must continue to refine and modernize their practice to meet global standards,” Ogunleye said.
He underscored the importance of legislative support in promoting the credibility of traditional medicine, stating that the sector requires a strong legal framework to foster regulation, research, and public trust.
Ogunleye, who chairs the House Committee on Overseas Investments and Sustainable Development Goals, encouraged the TMPN to initiate a review of existing laws governing traditional medicine and propose necessary amendments that would lead to more effective outcomes.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly is ready to back any meaningful proposal aimed at enhancing traditional medicine. We’re committed to enacting laws that serve the public interest and improve healthcare delivery—particularly in constituencies like Ikorodu,” he assured.
Ogunleye also pledged that the state’s development agenda under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu would continue to reflect Lagos’s diversity. He emphasized that Ikorodu would receive its fair share of development initiatives and projects.
He reiterated his personal commitment to supporting legislation that integrates traditional medicine more formally into the healthcare system, including laws to promote research, training, and the cultivation of indigenous medicinal herbs.
“I will advocate for laws that recognize and promote traditional medicine as a credible and complementary component of our healthcare system,” he added. “This includes providing incentives for research and encouraging the sustainable use of local herbs.”
In her response, the Secretary of TMPN, Ikorodu Branch, Ms. Oluwabunmi Ajibola, expressed gratitude to Ogunleye for his consistent support of the association. She noted that the donation of furniture would significantly improve the working environment at their secretariat and enable the group to function more effectively.
Ajibola also emphasized the association’s commitment to advancing traditional medicine in Nigeria. “We are doing all we can to modernize and professionalize our practice. Our goal is to gain wider acceptance and help fill critical gaps in healthcare delivery, especially in underserved communities,” she said.
She highlighted the growing importance of traditional medicine in complementing orthodox healthcare, noting that improved facilities and stronger legislative backing would enhance their contributions to public health.
The event marked a key moment in the collaboration between public officials and traditional medicine practitioners, signaling a shared commitment to integrating indigenous health practices into Lagos State’s broader healthcare strategy.
