CSP Ekene Nwosu: when a murderous and rogue police officer dies – Inibehe Effiong

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong stirred significant controversy on May 31 when he publicly took to social media to celebrate the passing of CSP Ekene Nwosu, a police officer in Akwa Ibom State.

Effiong’s post focused on the late CSP Ekene Nwosu, who formerly served as the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Anti-Robbery Squad at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command Headquarters.

According to Effiong, the death of CSP Nwosu has been met with widespread celebration among certain groups within the state. The lawyer described the deceased in highly condemnatory terms, branding him as a “devil” and a “despicable human being.” Effiong accused Nwosu of being a “murderous and callous policeman” who went to great lengths to dehumanize and brutalize numerous victims during his tenure.

In a post on Facebook, Effiong wrote, “I have read about the death of CSP Ekene Nwosu, the former OC of the Anti-Robbery Squad in the Akwa Ibom State Police Command Headquarters.

“Since the news of his demise broke, a lot of people have been celebrating, with many recounting their ordeals and terrible experiences in the hands of Ekene.

“Those who are against the celebration of his death are entitled to their opinions.

“The Ekene Nwosu that I knew, and had occasions to confront, was a devil, a despicable human being, a murderous and callous policeman who went to the extremes to dehumanize his many victims.

“Ekene is a perfect example of a rogue police officer, he subjected innocent people in Akwa Ibom to the most barbaric forms of dehumanization.

“He had no respect for lawyers, he had no respect for human rights, and held the Judiciary in contempt.

“The Courts found him culpable for the violation of the rights of citizens in many cases, including the ones handled by our law firm in Uyo.

“The fact that such a despicable person was allowed to continue in service despite many the complaints against him speaks to the rot in the Police.

“Ekene had so much power in the State.

“Successive Commissioners of Police failed to checkmate him, partly because he was a mercenary for oppressive and corrupt politicians in Akwa Ibom State.

“I am reliably informed that Ekene celebrated the death of the immediate past CP who finally ensured that he was transferred to Ekiti State where he died yesterday .

“Politicians used him to target people.

“Ekene was a devil, and I hope that other rogues in uniform will realize that they will die one day.

“It is true that every mortal will taste death, but we should always reflect on what we will be remembered for.

“For Ekene, those who remember him for his many evil deeds are within their right.”

Effiong’s remarks highlight the deep-seated anger and frustration among some citizens toward certain police officers and units, especially those linked with the notorious Anti-Robbery Squads across Nigeria, which have faced numerous allegations of human rights abuses and extrajudicial actions.

The celebration of CSP Nwosu’s death by some, as noted by Effiong, reflects a broader public outrage over perceived police brutality and misconduct.

While such public expressions have elicited mixed reactions, they underscore the urgent need for reform and accountability within law enforcement agencies.

The controversy surrounding Effiong’s post serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the Nigerian police force in regaining public trust and respect.
