President Tinubu to Commission Completed Segment of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Other Signature Infrastructure Projects
The Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, has announced that the completed portion of Phase I, Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway—measuring 30 kilometers out of the planned 750 kilometers—will be formally commissioned on Saturday, May 31st, 2025.
According to a statement by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Uchenna Orji, the commissioning ceremony will take place at Kilometer 8 of the project, located in the Jakande Estate area of Lagos State. The event will mark a significant milestone in the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for infrastructure development and regional connectivity.
In addition to the commissioning of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway segment, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also expected to virtually commission several other completed “Renewed Hope” signature projects across Southern Nigeria. These strategic projects are aimed at enhancing transportation networks, improving regional accessibility, and fostering economic development.
The infrastructure projects slated for commissioning include:
The Ahmadu Bello to Eleko Village Area Road on the Lekki Peninsula, Lagos State.
The dualization of the East-West Road, Section II (Subsection I) from Eleme Junction in Port Harcourt to Ahoada in Rivers State.
The rehabilitated, reconstructed, and expanded Lagos-Ibadan Dual Carriageway, a vital artery for commercial transit and mobility in the southwestern region.
The rehabilitated Alesi–Ugep Road, covering the Iyamoyung-Ugep Section in Cross River State.
The reconstructed collapsed Enugu Bridge at the New Artisan Market on the Enugu–Port Harcourt Road in Enugu State.
Another unspecified major infrastructure project will also be unveiled during the virtual commissioning.
Engr. Umahi emphasized the historical significance of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, describing it as a long-held vision of President Tinubu dating back 27 years. Originally conceived to expand Nigeria’s coastal transportation ecosystem, the highway aims to enhance accessibility across the nine coastal states of Nigeria. It is designed to facilitate economic activities, improve logistics, and promote trade and tourism along the coastal corridor.
Furthermore, the highway is one of four major “Renewed Hope Legacy Projects” initiated by the Tinubu administration. These projects are envisioned to foster regional integration, promote social cohesion, and stimulate inclusive development that is both resilient and sustainable.
“Today, as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a dream conceived has become a dream actualized,” Engr. Umahi stated, underscoring the fulfillment of a decades-long aspiration under President Tinubu’s leadership.
The commissioning marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s infrastructural renaissance and a testament to the administration’s commitment to transforming the nation’s transport infrastructure and unlocking the socio-economic potential of the regions served by these critical projects.
