Kano Govt Donates ₦1m Each to Families of Fallen Athletes

The Kano State Government has announced a ₦1 million donation to each of the families of the 22 athletes and officials who tragically lost their lives in a devastating motor accident. The victims were returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the accident occurred.
The announcement was made on Saturday by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who led a high-powered government delegation on a condolence visit to Nasarawa Hospital, where the remains of most of the deceased were deposited.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Deputy Governor Gwarzo described the accident as a monumental tragedy for the state and the nation at large. “This is one of the saddest days in the history of our sports community,” he stated solemnly. “These young, dedicated individuals represented Kano State with pride, dignity, and excellence. Some of them were even returning with medals — symbols of their hard work, patriotism, and commitment to excellence. To lose them in this manner, so close to home, is a deep wound to us all.”

The victims of the accident include key figures in Kano’s sports delegation: Ibrahim Galadima, spokesperson of the Kano State Sports Commission, Bilal Ahmad Salisu, a team photographer Drivers, medical personnel, Athletes and coaches from the kickboxing and wrestling teams, including team secretaries.


In addition to the monetary donation, the state government pledged to distribute food items and other essential relief materials to the grieving families as part of immediate support efforts.

To ensure the welfare of survivors, Governor Yusuf has directed that all injured athletes receive full medical treatment at the state’s expense. “We have already identified 20 of the deceased here at Nasarawa Hospital,” Gwarzo said.

“Two others have been taken home by their families. His Excellency has instructed that every bereaved family must be fully supported, and that no effort should be spared in providing world-class medical care to the injured.”

Following the visit to Nasarawa Hospital, the Deputy Governor proceeded to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where he met with seven injured athletes currently receiving treatment. He offered words of comfort and solidarity, assuring them that the government stands firmly by them during their recovery process.

“On behalf of His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the entire people of Kano State, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, teammates, and friends of the deceased,” Gwarzo said during the visit. “May Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgive their shortcomings and grant them eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus.”

The Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to standing by the bereaved families and injured survivors, not only through words but through continued action and support during this difficult time.
