Chelsea‘s decision to sign 22-year-old Liam Delap over Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been attributed to the club’s age policy, according to former Chelsea captain John Terry. Speaking on TalkSPORT, Terry revealed that Chelsea’s owners are hesitant to sign players above 29-30 years old on big money deals.
“If you’re looking at the next step, you need someone proven and who has scored goals in the Premier League,” Terry explained. “Usually, that’s an experienced player, but the owners are clear — they don’t want to bring in someone of 29 or 30 years of age on big money. It’s a different model. I personally feel we need that.”
Delap’s Profile Fits Chelsea’s Requirements
Delap, who scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances for Ipswich Town this season, is seen as a more financially viable option with existing Premier League experience. His age and potential for growth align with Chelsea’s new model, making him an attractive signing.
Osimhen’s Future Remains Uncertain
Despite Chelsea’s interest in Victor Osimhen last summer, the deal never materialized. Osimhen’s sensational season-long loan at Galatasaray has likely increased his market value, but Chelsea’s age policy may hinder his chances of joining the Blues. Other clubs, including Manchester United, have reportedly considered signing Osimhen.
Delap’s Move to Chelsea
The 22-year-old’s transfer to Chelsea is contingent on reaching an agreement on personal terms and fulfilling his £30 million release clause. Delap has reportedly rejected interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Everton, to join Chelsea.
