The foreign ministers of five Arab countries have condemned Israel’s decision to block their planned visit to the occupied West Bank. The ministers from Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were set to meet with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas in Ramallah to discuss promoting the establishment of a Palestinian state.

In a statement on Saturday, the Jordanian foreign ministry condemned “Israel’s decision to ban the delegation’s visit to Ramallah,” emphasizing the importance of international support for Palestinian statehood. Israel’s refusal to cooperate with the meeting is seen as a move to undermine Palestinian efforts to gain recognition as an independent state.

Background and Reactions

The Israeli government has come under increasing pressure from the United Nations and European countries, which favor a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. French President Emmanuel Macron recently stated that recognizing a Palestinian state is not only a “moral duty but a political necessity.” This stance is supported by many in the international community who believe that a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region.

The planned meeting in Ramallah was intended to promote the establishment of a Palestinian state, a move that Israel sees as a threat to its security. An Israeli official claimed that the Palestinian Authority’s refusal to condemn the October 7 massacre was a reason for not allowing the meeting. “Israel will not cooperate with such moves aimed at harming it and its security,” the official said.

Escalating Tensions

Tensions between Israel and Palestine have escalated recently, with Israeli forces opening fire near a diplomatic convoy in the occupied West Bank, sparking international outcry. The incident occurred near the Jenin refugee camp, where Israeli forces have been accused of using excessive force against Palestinian civilians.

The Israeli military claimed that its soldiers fired “warning shots” after the convoy deviated from an agreed-upon route. However, this incident has raised concerns about Israel’s actions in the occupied territories and its impact on diplomatic relations.

Settlement Expansion and Humanitarian Crisis

Israel’s expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank has been widely condemned by Palestinian officials and global human rights groups. The International Court of Justice has declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories as illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, with the UN warning that 2.3 million people in Gaza face starvation. The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, with at least 972 Palestinians killed and over 7,000 injured in the occupied West Bank since October 7, 2023. In Gaza, the death toll has surpassed 61,700, with thousands more presumed dead under the rubble.
