In a significant move aligned with Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape and the Federal Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, Toyota Nigeria Limited has announced plans to introduce new fuel-efficient hybrid and electric vehicles to the Nigerian market. This announcement was made by the Managing Director of Toyota Nigeria Limited, Kunle Ade-Ojo, during a press conference held on Thursday at the ongoing second edition of the Toyota Motor Show in Lekki, Lagos.
The event, which began on May 27 and will run until June 1 (excluding May 30), showcased a wide range of Toyota’s popular models including the Land Cruiser, Hilux, Fortuner, Granvia, and Prado, alongside automotive parts, motor oils, and services offered at the company’s body and paint shop. However, the highlight of the event was the reveal of the company’s plans to expand its portfolio with hybrid and electric vehicles that will support Nigeria’s green energy initiatives.
Ade-Ojo emphasized that Toyota Nigeria is committed to supporting the Federal Government’s green initiative by introducing models such as the Urban Cruiser and Corolla Cross in hybrid and electric variants. “We will be introducing more fuel-efficient vehicles with hybrid technology, featuring additional battery packs that extend mileage, thereby promoting environmentally friendly transport options,” he stated.
Furthermore, Ade-Ojo revealed plans to launch a mini Land Cruiser model by late 2025 or early 2026. This new vehicle will be slightly smaller than the popular RAV4 but will retain the rugged appeal of a four-wheel drive equipped with a 2.4-litre engine, catering to the demand for versatile SUVs in Nigeria.
The Managing Director also announced forthcoming additions including the Starlet Cross SUV and an updated Corolla Cross model. The new RAV4 model is also expected to debut towards the end of this year or early next year, enhancing Toyota’s diverse lineup in Nigeria.
Nigeria’s growing population, urbanization, and increasing awareness of climate change have spurred demand for vehicles that are not only cost-effective but also environmentally sustainable. The Federal Government has prioritized a green agenda that encourages cleaner energy usage, including the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Toyota Nigeria’s commitment to this agenda reflects a strategic alignment with national priorities and consumer expectations.
The introduction of hybrid and electric vehicles in Nigeria could help reduce fuel consumption and emissions, lower transportation costs for consumers, and support the global push toward decarbonization. Moreover, it will position Toyota Nigeria as a leader in automotive innovation within the West African region.
The ongoing Toyota Motor Show provides customers with exclusive opportunities to purchase selected models at discounted prices, alongside showcasing Toyota’s after-sales services and commitment to customer satisfaction. The event aims to enhance brand engagement and provide Nigerians with access to the latest automotive technologies.
With the increasing global shift towards sustainable mobility, Toyota Nigeria’s hybrid and electric vehicle introduction marks a pivotal step in Nigeria’s automotive market evolution. The company’s initiative is expected to stimulate local industry growth, create new jobs, and encourage infrastructural development such as charging stations for electric vehicles.
As Nigeria gradually transitions towards greener transportation alternatives, Toyota Nigeria’s forward-thinking approach offers consumers a blend of fuel efficiency, modern technology, and reliability synonymous with the Toyota brand.
