As the date for the illegal annual Biafra Day celebration approaches, traditionally enforced across the defunct Eastern region on May 30th, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has issued a stern warning to those planning to carry out this year’s unauthorized activities.
CP Orutugu made it clear that any attempt to enforce the event, which is considered illegal and a threat to national security, will not be tolerated by his command.
In a statement released yesterday on his behalf by the spokesman for the state police command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Tochukwu Ikenga, CP Orutugu emphasized that the Anambra State Police Command is fully prepared to prevent any form of disruption linked to the event.
He stated that the command would not condone any acts that could jeopardize peace and stability within the state or the country at large.
To enforce security and prevent any potential criminal activities, CP Orutugu announced the deployment of joint security teams comprising personnel from the Anambra State Police Command, State Security Services (SSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Immigration Services, and supported by the Nigerian Army.
These multi-agency teams have been strategically assigned to patrol every part of the state, with special focus on major cities and towns including Awka, Onitsha, Ihiala, Ekwulobia, Nnewi, Oraifite, and others.
The joint forces have been tasked with taking control of key strategic locations, ensuring a strong security presence to deter any unlawful gatherings or activities.
To facilitate rapid response and communication, CP Orutugu’s office has also provided dedicated telephone numbers that the public can use to report any security threats or breaches of peace anywhere within Anambra State.
The numbers are: the Command Control Room at 07039194332 and the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) at 08039334002. Additionally, contacts for various Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) have been made available to the public.
CP Orutugu expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration between the people of Anambra State and the security agencies. He acknowledged that the cooperation and support from Ndi Anambra have been instrumental in boosting the morale and motivation of the security personnel.
The partnership between the community and the police has significantly enhanced efforts to prevent any security breaches, fostering a safer and more secure environment across the state.
Reflecting on a recent closed-door meeting of Anambra Security Service commanders held ahead of the anticipated illegal sit-at-home order on May 30, CP Orutugu highlighted the unified stance taken by security agencies and citizens alike in condemning any actions that threaten national peace. This collective effort has strengthened the resolve of all security agencies to tackle threats swiftly and decisively.
The police-led Joint Security Force, which includes the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), alongside the Army and Navy, has intensified patrols and maintained a strong presence at major junctions and towns throughout Anambra State.
These measures demonstrate the unwavering commitment of the security agencies to maintaining law and order, deterring criminal activities, and reassuring the public of their safety.
The enhanced security deployment aims to create a secure environment not only for residents but also for visitors to the state. CP Orutugu urges the public to continue supporting security efforts by reporting any suspicious activities and making use of the provided contact numbers for prompt assistance.
