Arewa Summit International Urges Zoning of 2027 Presidency to South West, South East to Follow in 2031

Dr. Bashir Lamido, the head of Arewa Summit International, has strongly advocated that the South West should be the sole region to produce presidential candidates for the 2027 elections, urging all political parties to adopt this zoning arrangement.

He further proposed that the South East should be given the same opportunity in 2031, arguing that such a rotational approach would foster unity, equity, and sustainable political stability in Nigeria.

Dr. Lamido made this statement during a high-level political dialogue on zoning and national cohesion held in Abuja on Friday. Addressing an audience of political stakeholders, civil society leaders, and representatives from various regions, he emphasized that the proposed arrangement was not aimed at marginalizing any region but rather ensuring inclusive governance and national integration.

“For the sake of equity, national integration, and the stability of our democracy, we believe the South West should present all presidential candidates in 2027. Then, come 2031, the South East – which has long awaited its turn – should be given the full platform to produce the next president,” Lamido stated.

He underscored that this proposal is grounded in the principles of fairness and historical balance, noting that the northern region has historically held the presidency more than any other region. According to Dr. Lamido, acknowledging this reality is crucial to fostering a sense of belonging among all Nigerians and preventing further regional alienation.

“This is not just about politics. It’s about healing, trust-building, and showing every Nigerian that they belong to the same nation,” he said. “People may ask, what about the North? It should be the turn of the North in 2031. They forget that the North has spent more years leading the country than any other region.”

Dr. Lamido elaborated that the proposed zoning formula is a bold step toward strengthening democracy and bridging the historical divides that have long hampered national development. He insisted that equity must prevail, and no region should perpetually dominate or be excluded from national leadership.

Arewa Summit International, under Dr. Lamido’s leadership, has earned a reputation as a premier northern-based political think tank with a pan-Nigerian vision. The organization continues to advocate for policies that promote national unity and cross-regional cooperation.

“We are only hoping that in 2031, the South East should be extended the same national compliments as we are hopeful to do for the South West in 2027,” he added, reiterating the need for a structured, inclusive leadership rotation.

Dr. Lamido’s remarks come at a time when conversations around zoning and power rotation are gaining renewed traction in Nigeria’s political landscape. His message is a clarion call for political actors across the country to embrace a more inclusive and equitable system that acknowledges the diverse makeup of the Nigerian federation.
