The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested 10 miscreants and impounded 235 vehicles for various traffic-related offences in a sweeping enforcement operation targeting notorious traffic hotspots across the state.

The crackdown, which began on Wednesday, was led by the agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki. It focused on areas plagued by persistent congestion, illegal parking, and environmental violations—including Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu (Inter-State Terminal), and Oshodi.

According to a statement issued by LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the enforcement exercise was carried out under the directive of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa. Taofiq emphasized that the operation is part of a broader zero-tolerance policy now guiding LASTMA’s activities.

“During the initial phase of the enforcement, a total of 235 vehicles were impounded for breaching the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018,” the statement read. The impounded vehicles included 38 private automobiles, 156 painted commercial buses (Danfo), 19 minibuses (Korope) and tricycles, five haulage trucks, and 17 inter-state passenger buses.

The offences ranged from unlawful occupation of pedestrian walkways and obstruction of traffic flow to the establishment of unauthorized transport terminals and flagrant disregard for traffic laws.

In one particularly alarming incident, five articulated trucks were apprehended on the Adeniji Adele Bridge while illegally offloading livestock—rams, cows, and abattoir waste. The activity not only posed severe environmental hazards but also threatened public safety and the structural integrity of the bridge.

“The drivers, in blatant violation of sanitation laws, are now facing imminent prosecution,” Taofiq stated.

He further reiterated that all impounded vehicles will be processed and arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court, stressing that the days of lawlessness and impunity on Lagos roads are over.
