The 14-time African champion ended her illustrious career on a high note, receiving a heartfelt standing ovation from fans, officials, and wrestling stakeholders.
In a tearful farewell speech, Oborududu expressed gratitude to her supporters: “I want to thank everyone who has been part of my journey—the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, led by Daniel Igali, my teammates, and family.” She revealed that after contemplating retirement post-Olympics, she chose to retire at the National Sports Festival, where she debuted in 2006. Reflecting on her career, she highlighted her Tokyo Olympic medal as her most memorable moment, noting it was the first-ever Olympic wrestling medal won by an African woman, inspiring hope for future wrestlers.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Honourable Daniel Igali, praised Oborududu’s exceptional character and professionalism. “Blessing is irreplaceable. Beyond her achievements, her mindset, discipline, and pureness for the sport set her apart. She’s been a big sister to many wrestlers, taking them into her home and caring for them,” Igali said, describing her retirement as “bitter-sweet.”
Teammate Hannah Reuben led tributes, expressing admiration for Oborududu’s dedication and leadership. “She’s been an incredible teammate and captain. We wish her the best in her future endeavors,” Reuben said.
