Governor Makinde Unveils Vision to Elevate Oyo State Specialist Hospitals to University Teaching Hospital Standards
Oyo State Governor, Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming healthcare delivery in the state by upgrading state-owned specialist hospitals to the standard of University Teaching Hospitals.
This vision, he said, will be actualized through the provision of modern, high-quality medical equipment that will enhance training and healthcare services across the state.
Governor Makinde made this known during a formal handover of 31 state-of-the-art medical equipment to the management of Ring Road State Hospital, Adeoyo, in Ibadan. He stated that this initiative marks a significant step in the government’s broader plan to modernize public healthcare institutions and ensure residents of the state receive world-class medical care.
The governor, who was represented by his Executive Assistant on Administration, Rev’d. Idowu Ogedengbe, emphasized the strategic importance of equipping specialist hospitals like Ring Road State Hospital with modern medical tools. He noted that the administration’s goal is to position these hospitals as centers of excellence that can match the capabilities of University Teaching Hospitals, especially in the areas of clinical training, research, and service delivery.
Highlighting the motivation behind the equipment procurement, Governor Makinde referenced a 2024 medical outreach conducted by Christ Compassion to the Rural World. During the outreach, an assessment of Ring Road State Hospital revealed significant deficiencies, particularly in its surgical facilities. According to the governor, the outreach team could not carry out surgical procedures due to the poor condition of the hospital’s theatre, prompting the state government to take decisive action.
Rev’d. Ogedengbe, speaking on behalf of the governor, stated that the medical equipment delivered were not only of premium quality but also carefully selected to ensure that reagents and other consumables associated with them would be readily available and affordable.
He underscored the administration’s focus on sustainability, saying, “Thankfully, the equipment procured are not only of the best quality in the market, they are very modern and have been carefully selected to ensure that their reagents and other consumables are available and affordable. They will last long.”
In his remarks, Ogedengbe thanked Governor Makinde for the kind gesture and urged the management and staff of the hospital to adopt a strong maintenance culture. He emphasized the importance of preserving the equipment for long-term use and maximizing their potential to improve patient outcomes.
Earlier in the event, the Chief Medical Director of Ring Road State Hospital, Dr. Oladipo Aremu, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Makinde for his continuous efforts to revamp the health sector.
He acknowledged that the newly acquired equipment would significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality medical care and help mitigate challenges previously faced by both healthcare providers and patients.
Also lending his voice, the Director of the Christian Missionary Foundation, Dr. Olatunde Oladoyinbo, commended the governor for fostering a functional and effective healthcare system. He praised the government’s foresight and dedication to addressing critical gaps in the health sector, particularly in underserved areas.
The event marked yet another milestone in Governor Makinde’s healthcare agenda, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare for the people of Oyo State.
