President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of new Governing Council members for three major federal universities in Nigeria: the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU).

This move comes two months after the President dissolved the Governing Council of the University of Abuja and dismissed its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi, amid controversy regarding her eligibility for the position.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the presidency announced the reconstitution of the councils. The statement, titled ‘President Tinubu Appoints New Governing Council Members for Three Federal Universities’, detailed the names and geopolitical representation of the newly appointed members.

For the University of Abuja, the new council members are: Professor Rosemary Egonmwan (South-South), Dr. Adedeji Adefuye (South-West), Professor Sarki Abdulkadir (North-West), Professor Aminu Dukku (North-East).

These appointments are expected to bring stability and renewed leadership to the University of Abuja following the leadership vacuum and governance issues that led to the earlier dissolution.

In addition, President Tinubu also filled existing vacancies in the governing councils of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The newly appointed members for the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), are: Ogbonna Odo (South-East), Muhammad Tahir (North-West).

For Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, the new governing council members include: Dr. Nkem Okeke (South-East), Ofoke Ugbala (South-East), Dame Yakowa (North-West), Nojeeb Agunbiade (South-West).

These appointments reflect a broad regional representation and are part of the federal government’s commitment to enhancing the governance and administration of tertiary education in Nigeria. The newly constituted councils are expected to play a vital role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and academic excellence in their respective institutions.
