The Federal Government has officially inaugurated a 10-member Presidential Committee dedicated to the Implementation of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

Chaired by President Bola Tinubu, this committee is tasked with the critical responsibility of overseeing a strong, well-coordinated, and legally compliant deployment of DPI.

The committee was officially launched on Monday in Abuja, signaling a strong commitment to building a robust digital economy that can support inclusive growth and efficient public service delivery.

The Presidential Committee has been tasked with ensuring a well-coordinated, legally compliant, and development-focused rollout of DPI systems across the country.

According to a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the DPI initiative is anchored on three critical pillars: digital identity, financial payments, and data exchange. These pillars are designed to improve public service delivery, foster innovation, and support inclusive economic growth in Nigeria.

Speaking at the inauguration on behalf of the SGF, Senator George Akume, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized the transformative potential of DPI in building a modern digital economy. Dr. Tijani described the DPI as more than just a technological upgrade, but rather a foundational tool that will unlock new opportunities, create jobs, and empower Nigerian citizens.

“To achieve this vision, we must establish a well-coordinated governance structure. DPI is not just a technological shift — it’s a foundation for improved governance, service delivery, and citizen engagement,” Dr. Tijani said, underscoring the strategic importance of the initiative.

Adding her voice to the initiative, the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, pledged the full support of the commission towards the successful implementation of DPI.

She highlighted the critical role that digital infrastructure will play in advancing economic growth, enhancing transparency, and improving the overall quality of life for Nigerians.

Similarly, Dr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), pointed out the necessity of unifying government databases to enable seamless data exchange.

According to him, effective data sharing is crucial to enhancing citizens’ interactions with government services, thereby making those services more accessible and efficient.

The Managing Director of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), Mr. Premier Oiwoh, also emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration.

He noted that NIBSS has been working closely with NIMC to verify National Identity Numbers (NIN) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), a partnership that ensures secure and efficient financial transactions critical to Nigeria’s digital economy.

The newly formed Presidential Committee comprises key government officials and heads of strategic institutions. It is expected to provide strategic direction and foster synergy among agencies involved in digital identity management, payment systems, and data sharing. The committee’s composition reflects the Federal Government’s holistic approach to digital transformation.

Members of the committee include President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Chairman, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (who will serve as Member and Secretariat), the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and ministers responsible for Finance, Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Interior, Budget, and National Planning. Additionally, the Director-Generals of NIMC and NITDA are also part of this strategic group.

The inauguration of the Presidential Committee on DPI demonstrates the Nigerian government’s firm commitment to developing a strong digital public infrastructure that will drive innovation, improve governance, and position Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
