In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across Kano State and the nation, Senator Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker, has expressed profound sorrow over the brutal killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kano Police Division. The officer lost his life during a violent protest sparked by the death of a detained suspect.
The turmoil began in Rano Local Government Area when Abdullahi Musa, a motorcycle mechanic, was arrested by the police for reckless riding while allegedly under the influence of intoxicating substances. Musa was taken into custody but soon fell ill and was rushed to Rano General Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he died on May 26, 2025.
Following the suspect’s death, a mob of angry protesters mobilized and launched a fierce attack on the Rano Police Division. The protesters set parts of the police station ablaze and destroyed two police vehicles in the onslaught.
During the violent protests, the DPO sustained critical injuries and was subsequently transferred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. The loss of the senior police officer has been described as a grievous blow to the community and the police force.
Senator Shehu Sani condemned the gruesome attack, describing it as a ruthless and unjustifiable act. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), he lamented the officer’s death and called for swift justice against the perpetrators.
Senator Sani’s statement read:
“I briefly watched the video of the brutal murder of the DPO of Rano Police Station in Kano State by a mob. They tortured and butchered the police officer to death for performing his duty. He was said to have left behind a wife and four children. That despicable crime must not go unpunished. The perpetrators in that footage must all be brought to book. May his soul rest in peace, Amin.”
The senator’s remarks have resonated widely, drawing attention to the growing challenges faced by law enforcement officers in volatile environments.
The Chairman of Rano Local Government has called for a thorough investigation into the killing of the DPO, urging security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible. Meanwhile, the Kano State government has warned youths against acts of violence and vowed to take strict action against anyone involved in such destructive behavior.
Security sources have also confirmed the arrest of several suspects linked to the violent protests, emphasizing the need to restore peace and order in the affected communities.
This incident highlights the escalating tensions between residents and law enforcement in parts of Kano State, fueled by incidents that quickly spiral into violence. The killing of the DPO raises serious concerns about the safety of police officers tasked with maintaining law and order in increasingly hostile environments.
Experts warn that sustained violence against security personnel undermines efforts to combat crime and threatens community safety. They call for dialogue, community policing, and reforms to rebuild trust between the police and the public.
The death of the Rano DPO is a tragic reminder of the perils faced by law enforcement officers and the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to prevent mob violence. Senator Shehu Sani’s call for justice is a plea echoed by many Nigerians who seek peace, security, and the rule of law.
As investigations proceed, all eyes remain on Kano State authorities and the federal government to ensure justice for the fallen officer and to restore calm in the region.
