Lagos State Police Command Arrests Two Suspects Over Brutal Murder and Burning of Young Woman in Gangare
The Lagos State Police Command has made significant progress in the investigation of the shocking and brutal murder of a young woman, whose body was set ablaze on May 24, 2025, in the Gangare area near the canal behind Mile 12 Market, Lagos.
Following intensive investigations, the Command has arrested two principal suspects believed to be directly involved in the heinous crime.
The Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Lagos State Police Command, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed this development in an official statement issued on Monday, May 26, 2025.
According to CSP Hundeyin, preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was a native of Nasarawa State and not a Yoruba woman, as some social media reports and rumors had suggested.
CSP Hundeyin clarified that the tragic incident was not related to accusations of blasphemy, which had been widely circulated online and in various public forums. Rather, the police investigations revealed that the murder was the result of a personal dispute rooted in a troubled relationship between the victim and her estranged boyfriend. The boyfriend, who is currently at large, allegedly tried to forcefully rekindle their relationship against the victim’s wishes.
The statement highlighted that the boyfriend, along with several accomplices, conspired to attack the young woman. Two of these accomplices have already been apprehended and are now in police custody. CSP Hundeyin emphasized that the attack was premeditated and deliberately executed by the suspects, culminating in the victim being set on fire.
The police have intensified their efforts to track down the estranged boyfriend and other suspects who remain fugitives. The two suspects in custody are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where they are cooperating fully with police detectives. Their cooperation is reportedly aiding the police in uncovering further details about the crime and identifying others involved in the conspiracy.
CSP Hundeyin urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information about the case, stressing that the police are committed to ensuring justice is served.
He assured that the Command will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist the authorities.
This case has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice across Lagos and beyond, highlighting the urgent need for improved security and protection for vulnerable individuals in the state.
