Team Akwa Ibom is charging into the final days of the 22nd National Sports Festival with 28 medals—9 gold, 7 silver, and 12 bronze—after a strong performance on Sunday, May 25, boosted their tally with four additional medals.
The team’s success continued in Squash, securing a fifth medal with another bronze, while Ndikponke Okure earned a hard-fought bronze in the 400m hurdles. Judo remains the standout sport, with Immaculata Nelson Ufot and Enku Ewa Ekuta claiming gold in the women’s 57kg and 63kg categories, respectively.
Ekuta’s win marked her fourth straight national title, solidifying her status as a judo powerhouse.As the festival progresses, Akwa Ibom athletes are set to compete in high-stakes events across Abeokuta. Sprinter Victor Ime Samson, who clocked a personal best of 45.99 seconds to reach the men’s 400m final, is a top contender for gold at the MKO Abiola Stadium, which will also host Athletics, Tennis, and Cricket. Table Tennis athletes are pushing for medals on day two, while Squash players at the Alake Sports Center aim for a historic gold, building on their current haul of one silver and four bronze.
Other events today include Judo at Illisan Hall, Boxing and Kickboxing at Baptist High School, and Scrabble at Remo Stadium, as Team Akwa Ibom seeks to climb the medal table before the festival concludes.
