The Jigawa State Police Command has officially confirmed the unfortunate death of a palace guard resulting from an illegal horse riding procession that took place in the Gumel Local Government Area.
The tragic incident unfolded on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m., when a group of youths from Gumel town organized an unauthorized and unapproved horse riding event.
According to police sources, the procession was led by identified individuals including Ibrahim Gwani and Goni, both residents of Gumel town, along with other participants who have since fled the scene and remain at large. The horse riding event was carried out without the necessary official approvals and permits required to hold such public displays, thus constituting an unlawful assembly.
The unauthorized nature of the event reportedly created widespread panic and unrest within the community. The disturbance was significant enough to prompt the Emir of Gumel’s Palace to deploy palace guards in an effort to manage the situation and restore order.
During the attempt to disperse the unruly procession and prevent further disorder, tragedy struck when Abdulhadi Mana, a palace guard known locally as Kauran Dogorab Gumel, was tragically knocked down by galloping horses amid the chaos.
Abdulhadi Mana was immediately rushed to the Gumel General Hospital where medical staff confirmed his death, marking a somber moment for the community and the palace. The incident has been deeply mourned by local residents, palace officials, and the wider Jigawa community.
In response, the Jigawa Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the illegal procession and the subsequent fatality. Authorities have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend the suspects who remain at large, underscoring their commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.
Furthermore, the police command has issued a stern warning to the public, advising that all forms of public events, especially those involving mass gatherings or processions, must obtain prior authorization from the relevant authorities. The command emphasized that unauthorized activities pose significant risks to public peace and safety and that violations will attract appropriate legal consequences.
The police also called on community leaders, youths, and the general public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure peace, security, and adherence to established rules governing public assemblies.
This unfortunate incident serves as a grave reminder of the dangers associated with illegal gatherings and the importance of following official protocols to safeguard lives and maintain public order.
