The Australian state of Victoria has moved to fast-track a ban on machete sales following a violent gang fight at Northland Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s north. The confrontation, which involved machetes and other weapons, left a 20-year-old man seriously injured and hospitalized. Two boys, aged 15 and 16, have been charged with affray, intentionally causing injury, and possession of controlled weapons.

Details of the Ban

  • Effective Date: The ban on machete sales will commence on Wednesday, bringing forward the original start date of September.
  • Definition of Machetes: The ban covers knives with cutting blades longer than 20cm, excluding kitchen knives.
  • Amnesty Period: A three-month amnesty will begin in September, allowing individuals to surrender machetes at designated police stations without repercussions.
  • Penalties: Business owners found flouting the ban could face fines of up to $200,000 or prison time.

Premier Jacinta Allan emphasized the importance of public safety, stating, “The community shouldn’t have to deal with these weapons in their shopping centres – neither should our police.” She added that the ban aims to “choke the supply” of machetes. Deputy Commissioner David Clayton described youth knife crime as “rare” but “frightening,” noting that one in 10 knife crimes in Victoria are committed by young people in public places.

Investigation and Arrests

Police believe the fight was a planned confrontation between two rival youth gangs, with around 10 people involved. Three machetes have been seized, and two men, aged 20 and 18, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities expect more arrests to be made as the investigation continues.
