Akwa United Football Club has expressed deep disappointment and issued an apology to its fans, supporters, and the people of Akwa Ibom State following their relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. The club, which has competed in the top flight for 14 seasons, won the NPFL title in 2021 and secured FA Cup titles in 2015 and 2017, now faces the challenge of rebuilding in the National League.
In a statement released by the club’s management, Akwa United acknowledged their struggles this season, particularly at home, where they dropped 18 points, while managing only five points on the road. “We fought hard to find our rhythm, but our results, especially at home, were not good enough,” the statement read. The relegation is described as “hugely disappointing and embarrassing” to the state government, fans, sponsors, and partners.
The club expressed gratitude to its supporters, particularly Governor Umo Bassey Eno and Commissioner for Sports Elder Paul Bassey, for their unwavering support during a “challenging and difficult” season. Management emphasized unity and resilience, stating, “Now is the time to demonstrate love, strength, and unity more than ever.” Looking ahead, Akwa United is determined to return to the NPFL, with plans to reflect on lessons from the season and begin preparations for a swift promotion from the National League. “We have gone this path before and rallied back to the top. Next season may not be an exception,” the statement affirmed, highlighting the club’s commitment to restoring its “pride, glory, and honour.”
The club also thanked its fans, sponsors, and partners for their steadfast support, crediting them for past successes, including major trophies. Akwa United called for continued backing as they aim to reclaim their place among Nigeria’s football elite in the upcoming season.
