Real Madrid CF has appointed club legend Xabi Alonso as its new manager for the next three seasons, from June 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028, the club announced today.

Alonso, a revered figure in Real Madrid and global football, played 236 official matches for the club between 2009 and 2014, securing six titles, including the 2014 Champions League, one European Super Cup, one La Liga, two Copa del Rey titles, and one Spanish Super Cup. A stalwart for Spain, Alonso also won the 2010 World Cup and European Championships in 2008 and 2012, earning 113 caps.

The 43-year-old began his coaching career at Real Madrid’s youth academy, leading the U14 A team to League and Champions Tournament victories in the 2018-2019 season. Alonso’s recent tenure at Bayer Leverkusen solidified his reputation as one of the world’s top coaches, where he clinched the Bundesliga, German Cup, and German Super Cup over three seasons.

On Monday, May 26, Alonso will be officially presented as Real Madrid’s manager at Real Madrid City. Club president Florentino Pérez will first welcome Alonso for a formal signing ceremony, followed by a press conference in the Real Madrid City press room.
