President Bola Tinubu has named Comrade Philip Shaibu, the immediate-past deputy governor of Edo State, as the new Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS).

Shaibu is tasked with spearheading reforms to revitalize the institute and enhance its role in advancing Nigeria’s sports sector.

Established in 1974, the NIS, a parastatal under the National Sports Commission, focuses on training elite coaches, sports managers, and scientists while conducting research to boost Nigeria’s performance in international competitions.

Shaibu’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the institute’s contributions to national sports development.
