In a distressing development, suspected herdsmen have abducted two young siblings—Master Prince Ugwuegbulem and Miss Chizitere Ugwuegbulem—within the Umuoka community, located in the Amakaohia-Ubi Autonomous Community of Owerri West Local Government Area (LGA) in Imo State. The tragic event unfolded on Thursday night at approximately 8:30 pm, just about 200 meters from the siblings’ family residence.
The siblings, who are the children of Mr. Emeka Ugwuegbulem, an accomplished engineer, were reportedly kidnapped while returning home. The abduction has sent shockwaves through the local community, sparking widespread fear and anxiety among residents.
Mr. Marvelous Ngoha, a respected indigene of the community and CEO of Amakohia Ubi Vanguard, confirmed the unfortunate incident. He stated, “The siblings—children of Emeka Ugwuegbulem, an engineer—were kidnapped on their way home.” His confirmation highlights the urgency and severity of the situation.
According to sources close to the family and community, the kidnappers initially demanded a staggering ransom of ₦100 million (one hundred million naira). However, after some negotiation or reconsideration, the ransom demand was drastically reduced to ₦9 million (nine million naira), reflecting either the kidnappers’ assessment of the family’s capacity or their intent to expedite payment.
The abduction has thrown the community into a state of panic and distress. Residents of Umuoka and neighboring areas have voiced deep concerns over their safety and security, with many calling for immediate and decisive intervention by the state government and relevant security agencies. The incident underscores the growing insecurity challenges facing the region, particularly the menace posed by suspected herdsmen and other criminal elements.
Sources further reveal that the family has officially reported the kidnapping to the local police authorities. Efforts are ongoing to trace and rescue the siblings. Meanwhile, community members have rallied together to support the family and are appealing to the police and government officials to expedite investigations and take all necessary measures to ensure the safe and swift return of Master Prince and Miss Chizitere.
This harrowing incident serves as a grim reminder of the increasing risks faced by residents in rural communities, especially vulnerable groups such as children.
It also calls for enhanced security protocols, better community policing, and stronger collaboration between the government and local communities to stem the tide of kidnappings and restore peace and safety in Imo State.
