The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has firmly rejected suggestions that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on the verge of collapse. He expressed strong confidence in the party’s resilience and dismissed any fears that Nigeria is headed towards becoming a one-party state.

Speaking on Saturday during the PDP North Central Zonal Elective Congress held in Jos, Plateau State, Senator Moro described the event as a significant milestone in the party’s ongoing revival efforts.

“This has been a highly successful and encouraging exercise,” Moro said. “The enthusiasm among delegates from across the North Central zone, including the Federal Capital Territory, is evident. Everyone is energized and united behind the party’s rejuvenation.”

He explained that the congress was part of a broader strategy to restore internal cohesion and reposition the PDP. “This is just one of several key activities leading up to the National Convention, where a new national leadership will be elected. The perceived crisis in the party has largely been due to leadership disputes. But with structured elections now taking place from the ward level up to the zonal level, culminating in the national convention, the PDP is undergoing a necessary and healthy transformation,” he added.

Senator Moro emphasized that the emergence of new leadership across all levels signals a fresh start for the party. “The PDP is not collapsing—far from it,” he asserted. “With strong turnout and participation from every part of the zone, and with committed leaders like former Governor Bukola Saraki actively involved, I have no doubt that we are on a path to recovery and growth.”

He also dismissed fears of Nigeria turning into a one-party state. “That scenario is not realistic. While defections may cause momentary disruption, the PDP remains a deeply rooted political force. Our members will regroup, recommit, and rededicate themselves to the party’s ideals. I am confident the PDP will emerge stronger.”

In his remarks, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to democratic principles and constitutional governance. Addressing delegates, he said, “Democracy is the bedrock of our governance structure. That’s why we continue to uphold our Constitution through regular and transparent elections.”

Governor Mutfwang commended the outgoing zonal leadership for their performance over the past eight years and expressed confidence in the new executive team. “The state chapters have done a commendable job. Your choices have been ratified, and those emerging as zonal leaders have earned the trust of the people,” he said.

He also praised aspirants who stepped down for the sake of party unity. “To those who sacrificed their ambitions in the interest of the party, I offer my deepest gratitude. You have displayed remarkable loyalty and political maturity. This noble gesture will not be forgotten.”

As the voting process commenced, Governor Mutfwang called for a peaceful and orderly exercise. “Let us ensure a smooth, rancor-free election. To those who may be called upon to make further sacrifices, remember—it is not a burden, but an honour.”

He concluded by reaffirming the party’s grassroots connection: “The PDP belongs to the people. They believe in us, and we must ensure that power truly resides with them. The North Central zone will continue to play a vital role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future. I believe this region will remain a stronghold of the PDP and a beacon of democratic values.”
