The Ferrari F2001, driven by Formula One icon Michael Schumacher to victory at the 2001 Monaco Grand Prix, sold for €15.98 million (£13.43 million) at an RM Sotheby’s auction held before qualifying for this year’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The sale set a record for the most expensive Schumacher-driven car ever auctioned and ranks as the fourth priciest Formula One car sold, trailing the £42.75 million Mercedes ‘streamliner’ raced by Sir Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio, sold in February.

Schumacher also piloted the F2001 to win the 2001 Hungarian Grand Prix, securing the fourth of his seven world championships. The auction price surpassed the previous record for a Schumacher car, the £9.75 million paid for his 2003 Ferrari in 2002.
