The traditional ruler of Okahia Autonomous Community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, Eze Okey Ananaba, has lauded Governor Alex Otti for significantly improving the welfare of traditional rulers in the state. According to the monarch, the governor took swift action to enhance their monthly stipends upon learning of the meager allowances previously paid to them.

Speaking during a commendation of Governor Otti’s performance in less than two years in office, Eze Ananaba disclosed that, until recently, some traditional rulers were receiving as little as N10,000 as a monthly stipend. However, the governor, in a move described as unprecedented, increased the monthly allowance to a minimum of N250,000 per traditional ruler, along with additional incentives.

“Traditional rulers in Abia State have never experienced this level of consideration and support since the return of democracy in 1999,” Eze Ananaba said. “Despite our responsibilities as custodians of culture, tradition, and peace in our communities, previous administrations offered us little more than neglect.

“We supported them, and they completed their tenures, yet our welfare was largely ignored. Stipends ranged from N10,000 to N30,000 monthly, with senior traditional rulers receiving slightly more, while many of us were left in dire straits.”

The monarch expressed gratitude that Governor Otti, upon hearing their plight, promptly revised their stipends to N250,000, which is now paid consistently on the 28th of every month, in line with the salary schedule for state civil servants. He described the decision as a mark of true leadership and an acknowledgment of the vital role traditional institutions play in governance and community stability.

In light of these developments, Eze Ananaba called on his fellow traditional rulers to remain steadfast in their support of Governor Otti’s administration. He emphasized that the governor’s efforts to transform the state are evident, particularly through ongoing infrastructure projects such as the reconstruction of Port Harcourt Road in Aba, and the rehabilitation of health centers and schools across the state.

“We are eyewitnesses to the transformation happening in Abia State,” he said. “It is only fitting that we continue to support this administration, which has shown genuine concern for our people. Politics may be driven by interests, but let us not allow selfish interests to derail the progress we are witnessing. We must never return to the dark days of neglect and hardship.”

Eze Ananaba concluded by urging all traditional rulers in Abia to be partners in progress and to play their part in sustaining the positive momentum under Governor Alex Otti’s leadership.
