The National Sports Festival at the MKO Abiola Stadium’s Tennis Center in Abeokuta is gearing up for an electrifying conclusion today as the Men’s and Women’s Singles finals promise intense battles for gold.In the Men’s Singles final, Ogun State’s Christopher Bulus will face off against Bayelsa State’s David Ekpeyong.
Bulus earned his spot with a commanding 6-3, 6-3 victory over Daniel Adeleye of Ekiti State, while Ekpeyong, battling through injuries, secured a hard-fought 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win against Rivers State’s Abua Canice. “I’m playing for the home state, the number one state, and as the fans’ favorite, I’m going for gold,” Bulus declared post-match.
Ekpeyong, undeterred, promised an exciting clash: “Christopher is a good player, based in the US, and was a senior when I played junior, but I’ll give my best.”
The Women’s Singles final will see Delta State’s Barakat Quadri take on Ogun State’s Yakubu Ohunene. Quadri dominated Edo State’s Omotola Blessing 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals, while Ohunene outlasted Ekiti’s Ogunjobi Success in a grueling 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 match that lasted over an hour.
Dignitaries, including Director General of the National Sports Commission Bukola Olopade and President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation Engineer Ifedayo Akindoju, are expected to attend the finals, which will determine the gold medalists today.
