The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has appealed to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to actively support the Federal Government’s initiatives aimed at combating the spread of fake news and misinformation across the country.

This appeal was made on Friday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the NUJ President, Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya, to the minister.

Expressing deep concern about the increasing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), Idris highlighted the alarming rise of deepfake videos that falsely portray public officials in compromising and damaging scenarios. He warned that such fabricated content not only tarnishes reputations but also causes emotional distress to affected families.

“AI technology can serve positive purposes, but it also has a dark side. For instance, someone could be sitting right here, and another person’s face could be digitally imposed onto their body in a misleading way. These deepfakes have devastating consequences, ruining lives and reputations,” Idris explained.

He further disclosed that the federal government is collaborating closely with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to cleanse the digital environment, while ensuring that freedom of expression remains protected.

“As a government, we are committed to sanitizing social media platforms and the digital space without violating citizens’ fundamental rights. Thankfully, the global community is recognizing the severity of this threat, with UNESCO leading efforts to address it,” the minister added.

Idris urged the NUJ to take an active role in preserving the integrity of journalism by fighting disinformation and exposing unprofessional practitioners within the media industry. He also encouraged the union to promote ethical reporting standards, especially among citizen journalists and the wider public.

Highlighting a key milestone, the minister announced the creation of Nigeria’s first UNESCO-approved Category 2 Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute—an initiative that is unique worldwide. The institute is designed to equip journalists, students, and citizens with the skills to critically evaluate digital content, effectively counter misinformation, and foster responsible engagement with the media.

In closing, Idris congratulated the NUJ on celebrating its 70th anniversary and reiterated the Tinubu administration’s unwavering commitment to press freedom, emphasizing its vital role in sustaining Nigeria’s democratic values.

Responding, NUJ President Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya praised President Bola Tinubu for appointing a seasoned media professional to lead the Ministry of Information.

He also pledged the union’s continued support in promoting the government’s achievements. Yahaya briefed the minister on the various activities planned to commemorate the NUJ’s 70 years of service, noting that Minister Idris is expected to serve as Chief Host for the anniversary events.
