Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s strong commitment to equipping Nigeria’s armed forces with the necessary platforms and resources to effectively combat insecurity.

Dr. Matawalle made these remarks during the Jumu’at service held yesterday in Abuja, marking the 69th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.

He highlighted recent acquisitions by the Navy, including new ships and helicopters, which have significantly enhanced its capabilities in tackling crude oil theft and strengthening maritime security operations. “Several new platforms are set to be commissioned soon.

This is a testament to the government’s outstanding efforts in providing the necessary equipment and support,” he said. “Next week, I will be traveling to Lagos to officially commission some of these platforms, which are part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at ensuring that the Nigerian Navy and all branches of our armed forces are adequately equipped.”

Dr. Matawalle also called on Muslims to serve as positive ambassadors of Islam wherever they are, urging officers and personnel of the Nigerian Navy to remain mindful and dedicated in carrying out their duties. “I advise them to practice patience, fear God in all their dealings, and adhere to the teachings of our Holy Prophet Muhammad. I have great confidence in the men and women of the Nigerian Navy,” he stated.

In his own address, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, assured Nigerians of the Navy’s renewed resolve to intensify efforts against enemies of the state and other criminal threats. Represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Navy), Rear Admiral Ibrahim Dewu, Ogalla emphasized the Navy’s unwavering commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and maintaining national peace through strategic and collaborative operations.

He noted that illegal activities by criminal groups continue to threaten the security of Nigeria’s maritime domain. “We have ramped up operational engagements to neutralize these economic saboteurs with significant success. This progress has been possible due to the support of President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Tinubu, particularly through the acquisition of modern platforms that demonstrate the Navy’s enhanced capability and strength,” he explained.

Vice Admiral Ogalla further highlighted efforts to improve personnel welfare under his leadership, including the provision of suitable accommodations aimed at ensuring the well-being of naval staff.

He described the anniversary celebrations as a crucial moment for both collective and individual reflection on the core values of the Navy: professionalism, integrity, and teamwork.

He urged all personnel to maintain discipline and abide by the law at all times, encouraging them to use the occasion to renew their dedication with focus, enthusiasm, and hope toward building a prosperous future for the Navy.

“As we celebrate this milestone, let us also foster goodwill among ourselves and collaborate to elevate both the service and our beloved nation, Nigeria,” he concluded.
