The Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria eSports Federation, Damilola Pedro, has declared eSports as a transformative force capable of leading Nigeria’s modern sports economy.
Speaking at the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed the Gateway Games 2024, Pedro highlighted the historic inclusion of eSports as a demonstration sport, marking a significant milestone for the industry.
“Today, we are not just adding another game; we are making a bold statement. eSports is taking the stage, giving voice to a generation that has been ignored, misunderstood, and underestimated,” Pedro stated. She emphasized the global video game industry’s $180 billion valuation, surpassing the combined worth of the film and music industries. With over 3.3 billion gamers worldwide, Africa is projected to have the fastest-growing gaming population, and Nigeria is expected to lead with the highest number of gamers in Africa and the third-largest globally by 2027.
The inclusion of eSports at the Gateway Games, under the leadership of Nigeria eSports Federation President Messiah Makori, was described as a validation of the industry’s growing relevance. Pedro called on the media to partner with the Federation to shape public perception and unlock eSports’ full potential.
She praised the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their visionary support in adopting competitive gaming at the national level.
Federation President Messiah Makori echoed her sentiments, expressing pride in eSports’ historic inclusion at the Festival and confidence that it marks the beginning of greater achievements for Nigerian sports.
As eSports takes center stage, Nigeria is positioning itself as a global leader in the rapidly growing industry, with the potential to redefine the nation’s sports and economic landscape.
