The Lagos State Police Command has successfully arrested a 39-year-old fugitive, Kabiru Oyedun, who was among the inmates that escaped from the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State. His arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to recapture inmates who broke out during previous incidents at correctional facilities in Nigeria.
According to credible sources cited by renowned security analyst Zagazola Makama, Oyedun was apprehended on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at approximately 5:35 p.m. The arrest took place in the Oshin-Welder area of Ayobo, a densely populated suburban community located on the outskirts of Lagos.
A senior police officer attached to the Lagos Zone 2 Police Headquarters, situated in Onikan, Lagos Island, confirmed the development. He revealed that the arrest was the result of timely intelligence and cooperation from local residents. Concerned members of the public reportedly spotted the suspect in the area and immediately alerted the police, providing critical information regarding his whereabouts.
In response, a team of police detectives was quickly dispatched to the location. The officers acted promptly and, according to the police source, managed to apprehend Oyedun without any resistance or incident, ensuring the safety of both the suspect and the public during the operation.
Following his arrest, the Lagos State Command notified the State Comptroller of Corrections, who has now taken custody of the fugitive. Oyedun is expected to be transferred back to the Osun State Correctional Service, where he will face further investigation and appropriate disciplinary actions in relation to his escape and other possible offenses.
Authorities have commended the swift action of the police as well as the vigilance of local residents who provided the crucial tip-off. The successful arrest underscores the importance of community policing and the role of public cooperation in maintaining law and order.
Efforts are ongoing to track and rearrest other escapees from the Ilesa Correctional Centre, as law enforcement agencies continue to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering operations across the country.
