Former Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been named in England’s squad for next month’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra and a friendly against Senegal, marking his first call-up since joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli last summer.
The 29-year-old, who last played for England in the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, has impressed with 28 goals in 42 appearances for Al-Ahli this season, including a key role in their Asian Champions League triumph.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel, who previously omitted Toney from his March squad, praised the forward’s form. “He deserves to be with us,” Tuchel said. “He’s scored over 20 goals and made a big contribution with goals and assists.” Tuchel had planned to visit Toney in Saudi Arabia but opted to bring him into the squad instead.
England will face Andorra on June 7 in a World Cup qualifier, followed by a friendly against Senegal at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground on June 10. The squad includes eight players from Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid, who will compete in the Club World Cup starting five days after the Senegal match.
Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham is included despite upcoming shoulder surgery post-Club World Cup, while Manchester City’s Phil Foden is a notable absentee, and no Manchester United players were selected.
