Ebubechi Onyedikachi Akosa, a rising star from Team Imo, expressed heartfelt gratitude after securing a silver medal in the Men’s 102kg Weightlifting event at the ongoing Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival, held at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Sagamu.

The achievement marked a significant milestone for Akosa, who was competing in his first National Sports Festival and only his second major competition.

Akosa lifted 150kg in the Clean & Jerk, finishing second behind Team Bayelsa’s Adeyemi Abayomi, who claimed gold with a 175kg lift. Reflecting on his journey, Akosa credited divine providence, his coaches, and supporters for his success. “I’m grateful to God, my parents, coaches, and everyone who has supported me,” Akosa told Team Imo Media. “My training and mindset prepared me for this, despite it being my first National Sports Festival.”

Discovered by his coach, Luke Ibeh, whom he affectionately calls “Miracle Coach,” Akosa’s entry into weightlifting was serendipitous. A Political Science (Education) graduate from Alvan Ikoku University of Education in Owerri, he was initially content with routine gym workouts until Ibeh introduced him to the sport. “I decided to give it a try, and seeing improvements encouraged me to keep going,” he said.

Akosa’s debut at the Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo earlier this year saw him clinch three gold medals in the 102kg category, setting the stage for his strong performance in Ogun. Encouraged by Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Akosa remains focused on growth without succumbing to pressure. “I don’t set specific targets,” he said. “I want to stay committed to the process and see what the future holds.”
