A small plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood early Thursday, setting about 15 homes on fire and forcing evacuations along several blocks. The incident occurred in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood near the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, amidst foggy weather conditions.

“We have jet fuel all over the place,” Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy said during a news conference, highlighting the severity of the situation. “Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now.” Eddy confirmed that there was a “direct hit to multiple homes” in the area, with a gigantic debris field.

The foggy conditions likely contributed to the crash, with Eddy noting that “you could barely see in front of you” at the time of the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the Cessna 550 aircraft, capable of carrying six to eight people, crashed near the airport. However, the number of people on board remains unknown.

“It was very foggy at the time the private plane crashed,” Eddy added, describing the challenging conditions faced by emergency responders. The authorities have urged residents to avoid the area near Sculpin Street and Santo Road as crews work to contain the situation.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
