The Inspector-General of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the tragic event involving personnel of the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority, which led to the unfortunate death of Kehinde Alade
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a thorough investigation into the tragic death of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet in Oyo State.
The incident occurred while Kehinde was en route to an examination centre in Ibadan to sit for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
According to the Oyo State Government, the boy’s father had reportedly been driving against traffic when the incident took place.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the police officer responsible for the shooting has been taken into custody.
He further noted that the Inspector-General has strongly condemned the incident and assured the public that justice will be served.
“The Inspector-General of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the tragic event involving personnel of the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority, which led to the unfortunate death of Kehinde Alade,” the statement read.
“He emphasized that the investigation would be transparent, with its findings made public to ensure accountability. The IGP also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”
Additionally, ACP Adejobi addressed a separate incident in Edo State, where police operatives came under attack. The officers, members of the Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team, were traveling through the state from Lagos in the early hours of Monday, May 20, 2025, when they encountered a violent mob near the University of Benin in Okhuimwun Community, Ovia North-East Local Government Area.
The mob allegedly blocked the road and assaulted the officers with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects, leaving two of them seriously injured.
“Despite the unprovoked aggression and imminent threat to their lives, the officers exercised remarkable restraint by refraining from the use of force,” Adejobi stated. “The injured officers are currently receiving medical care and are reported to be in stable condition.”
The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the attack, warning against acts of lawlessness and violence against its personnel. Investigations into the incident have commenced, and the Force has pledged to prosecute anyone found culpable.
