The US House of Representatives has passed President Donald Trump’s comprehensive tax and spending cuts package, marking a significant victory for both Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson. The Domestic policy bill, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” passed with a narrow margin of 215 to 214, after Johnson and Trump worked tirelessly to win over key holdouts.
“Sometimes it’s good to be underestimated, isn’t it?” a sleep-deprived Johnson quipped on the House floor early Thursday. Trump played a crucial role in passing the bill, making impassioned appeals to GOP lawmakers and strong-arming his fellow Republicans to line up behind his agenda.
The bill includes measures that would deeply cut into Medicaid and food stamps while making permanent the trillions of dollars in individual income tax breaks from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It also devotes billions to border security, allowing for a major crackdown on immigration. To win over holdouts, House Republicans unveiled a package of changes, including speeding up work requirements for Medicaid and phasing out Biden-era energy tax credits.
Key Provisions:
- Medicaid Changes: Work requirements will kick in by the end of 2026, earlier than initially proposed.
- Energy Tax Credits: Biden-era credits will be phased out sooner than planned.
- SALT Cap: A $40,000 cap on state and local income tax deductions for certain income groups.

The bill’s fate in the Senate remains uncertain, with Republicans signaling plans to make changes. Trump and Johnson aim to sign the bill into law by July 4, adding pressure to the Senate to move quickly. Despite challenges, Johnson expressed confidence in the bill’s passage, saying, “You never know ‘til the final vote tally, but I’m convinced we’re going to pass this bill tonight.”
