The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) Oyo State Chapter has accused the management of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) headed by Chief Dotun Olaitan and other tertiary institutions in the state of disregarding Governor Seyi Makinde’s directive to review the pensions of retired workers.
According to a press release signed by Com. (Dr.) Segun Abatan, Secretary of the Oyo State NUP Council, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had reviewed upward the pensions of Oyo State pensioners, making them the highest paid in the country. However, the managements of B.C.O.S and some tertiary institutions have refused to implement the directive, citing the need for an enabling circular or authority from the governor. Despite the union informing the BCOS management of the Governor’s resolves and directive.
BCOS Pensioners in Distress
The union revealed that BCOS Pensioners had not received their reviewed pensions in April, despite a promise made by the management during a meeting on April 23, 2025. The union expressed concern that the BCOS management’s actions were leaving pensioners to suffer, despite the organization’s huge revenue generation.
Independent investigation revealed that some of the neglected pensioners are living under inhumane, pitiable circumstances.
Some complaining of hunger and inability to meet up with their medical and other needs.
According to reports, some of these pensioners have turned to begging for financial assistance for survival.
According to the NUP “The BCOS is a huge organisation that should be making a lot of money. If it were a private organisation it would have been a huge cash cow,” Abatan said.”
The BCOS Chairman, Chief Dotun Olaitan was said to have arrogantly with impunity told the NUP leadership that she can’t prioritise the welfare of pensioners above other interests within the Corporation.
According to the press release “*We hope the statement by the Chairman of BCOS to the effect that she “cannot close the BCOS down for Pensioners” is what is now playing out!” _”
“Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen “in the characteristic arrogance of the academia and some Chief Executives, the Boards and Managements of Oyo State Tertiary Institutions and BCOS”…
“indicated that they would not implement the directive of the Governor unless His Excellency wrote them an approving authority or Circular! Even when our Union wrote the Management of these Institutions that the words of the Governor are laws and should be regarded as authority that should be respected, they remained recalcitrant saying if it took His Excellency eternity to write them the enabling circular they would not implement pension reviews for our Pensioners in their domains. – NUP”
The BCOS Chairman, Chief Dotun Olaitan has been in the eye of the storm since her appointment as the first female to head the Corporation’s Board with a series of accusations, allegations of maladministration and others.
The BCOS has been plaqued with a number of problems in recent times, ranging from alleged poor administration, inability to pay workers and pensioners salaries, mass resignation, indebtedness, litigation, poor programming and declining reputation.
Chief Olaitan’s leadership is being allegedly labelled ‘catastrophic and problematic’ in hush tones within the Corporation.
Some of the challenges faced by the corporation are believed to be inherited by the current leadership of BCOS.
The union NUP pleaded with Governor Makinde to transfer BCOS pensioners to the mainstream Oyo State Pensions Board, citing the organization’s ability to generate revenue and the pensioners’ contributions to the state’s growth.
The NUP also hinted of planned street protest and industrial action.
The Salami K.A. Tertiary Institutions Group has resolved to hold a peaceful protest in all tertiary institutions on June 3, 2025, if their demands are not met. The union has assured members of police protection and media coverage on the day of the protest.
This development and alleged act of recalcitrancy could be viewed in public domain as a dent to the legacy and philosophy of Governor Seyi Makinde as a welfarist and workers friendly Governor.
