In a unanimous show of support, all 22 governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made during the APC National Summit held on Thursday at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja. Themed “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far”, the summit served as a strategic platform to review the party’s achievements and chart a forward course under President Tinubu’s leadership.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), made the declaration while addressing the gathering. He moved the motion for President Tinubu’s adoption as the APC’s unopposed presidential candidate for the next electoral cycle. The motion was promptly seconded by PGF Vice Chairman and Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani.
Following the motion, a voice vote was conducted and was met with resounding approval. The endorsement received a standing ovation from participants at the summit, which included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, members of the National Assembly, serving and former APC governors, as well as delegates and party stakeholders from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The endorsement underscores a deepening consensus within the party around Tinubu’s leadership and political direction. It also follows a similar endorsement by the APC’s Northwest faction just five days earlier, further solidifying the president’s position as the party’s flagbearer heading into the next presidential election.
President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, has been implementing his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on economic revitalization, national security, infrastructure development, and institutional reforms. Thursday’s endorsement signals continued party backing for his policy agenda and a strong desire for continuity beyond 2027.
Political analysts view the early endorsement as a strategic move by the APC to consolidate party unity and deter potential intra-party challengers ahead of the 2027 primaries. It also sets the tone for an extended campaign cycle likely to begin in earnest in the coming months.
