The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has officially expelled a first-year student, Chukwuemeka Victory, from the Department of Public Health following his alleged involvement in a phone theft incident.

This disciplinary action was announced in a formal statement issued on Monday, May 19, 2025, and signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Chukwuka Icha.

According to the statement, the decision to expel the student came after a thorough and meticulous investigation conducted by the Senate Students Disciplinary Committee (SSDC). The committee found Chukwuemeka Victory responsible for the phone theft that took place during the 2023/2024 academic session.

The statement reads in part: “The Vice Chancellor has received the report of the Senate Students Disciplinary Committee, which investigated an alleged case of phone theft during the 2023/2024 Academic Session. Senate has approved the recommendation of the SSDC that you be expelled from the University for phone theft.”

The letter further instructs relevant university officials—including the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, the Head of the Department of Medicine and Surgery, and the Chief Security Officer—to enforce the expulsion order immediately and ensure strict compliance with the Senate’s decision.

In a related statement, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, along with the university’s management team, reaffirmed their firm commitment to maintaining discipline and integrity within the institution.

They emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct or unethical behavior among students, underscoring the university’s resolve to foster a safe and honorable academic environment for all members of the university community.

The University of Calabar’s decisive action sends a clear message that violations of the university’s code of conduct, particularly those involving criminal acts such as theft, will be met with swift and uncompromising sanctions.
