The Oyo State Government has debunked reports suggesting that medalists at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed the “Gateway Games,” are receiving cash rewards below their expectations.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, clarified through the General Manager of the Oyo State Sports Council, Mr. Tunde Ajibike, that the instant cash rewards of N20,000 for gold, N10,000 for silver, and N5,000 for bronze medalists are intended to motivate athletes during the competition and encourage those yet to compete.
Hon. Adegoke emphasized that these immediate rewards are separate from a larger package to be announced by Governor Seyi Makinde at the conclusion of the biennial event. “Oyo is a pacesetter state. We are unique and strategic. Governor Makinde has consistently rewarded athletes in past National Sports Festivals and even at the last Commonwealth Games,” she stated, highlighting the state’s commitment to supporting its athletes.
The commissioner also confirmed that all registered athletes in Abeokuta have received their allowances promptly and are performing admirably, contributing to Oyo’s strong standing on the medals table. She assured that Governor Makinde will host, celebrate, and generously reward the athletes upon their return.
Recalling past achievements, the statement noted that Team Oyo secured fourth place at the Edo 2022 National Sports Festival, winning 50 gold, 51 silver, and 62 bronze medals. Medalists were rewarded with ₦1 million per gold, ₦500,000 per silver, ₦350,000 per bronze, and ₦250,000 for non-medalists, demonstrating the state’s track record of recognizing athletic excellence.
