Authorities in Libya have arrested a Nigerian national in connection with the fatal stabbing of another migrant worker in the southern city of Sabha.

The incident, which occurred on May 18, 2025, has drawn attention to the ongoing risks faced by migrants in the region, where violence and legal vulnerabilities are common.

According to a statement released by Migrant Rescue Watch on Monday, May 19, 2025, the suspect, identified only by the initials “M. Z.,” was apprehended by the Manshiyya Police Department.

Preliminary reports indicate that the Nigerian national allegedly stabbed another migrant worker during a confrontation, resulting in the latter’s death. The exact circumstances that led to the incident have not been publicly disclosed.

“18.05.25 – Manshiyya Police Dept. arrested in Sabha a Nigerian #migrant (‘M. Z.’) on charges of aggravated assault causing death. The accused stabbed a fellow migrant worker causing his subsequent death. The case was referred to public prosecution for legal action.”

The case has since been referred to the Libyan Public Prosecution for further investigation and legal proceedings. Authorities have not yet released the identity or nationality of the deceased.

Sabha, a city located in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya, is a known transit hub for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa seeking passage through Libya to Europe. The area has long struggled with lawlessness, armed groups, and inadequate governance, which have contributed to a perilous environment for both locals and migrants.

The arrest underscores ongoing concerns about migrant safety in Libya, where many are subject to violence, detention, and exploitation amid ongoing political instability. Human rights organizations and international observers continue to call for improved protections for migrant populations in the region.
