The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended a 24-year-old man, identified as Ubong Friday Benson, for allegedly threatening to kill his father and unlawfully possessing a cache of dangerous weapons, including a locally made pistol.

This was disclosed in an official statement issued on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John.

According to the statement, the arrest followed a distress call received from a resident of Ikot Imoh village in the Oruk Anam Local Government Area, who reported that his son had locked himself in the family compound and was issuing violent threats, including a vow to stab him with a dagger.

“The complainant further stated that the suspect had, on previous occasions, threatened to shoot him with a locally fabricated firearm, which he usually concealed in a nearby bush,” the statement read.

Acting swiftly, a tactical police team was immediately dispatched to the location. Upon arrival, the operatives were able to subdue and arrest the suspect without further escalation.

During preliminary questioning, Ubong Friday Benson reportedly admitted to owning a locally made pistol. He subsequently led officers to the specific location in the surrounding bush where the weapon had been hidden.

In addition to the recovered pistol, a further search of the suspect’s belongings yielded several other dangerous items, including: One sharp dagger; A metal file; A long iron chisel; An iron hammer; A penknife.

DSP Timfon John also revealed that preliminary findings suggest the suspect may have assaulted other members of the community in the past. “Investigations indicate that the suspect had allegedly inflicted injuries on some residents of Ikot Imoh village prior to his arrest,” she stated.

“However, as of the time of this release, only his father has formally come forward to provide a statement to law enforcement.”

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to justice, stressing that thorough investigations are underway. The Command emphasized that the suspect would face appropriate charges in court upon the conclusion of the ongoing inquiries.
