The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Committee has approved several key infrastructure development contracts aimed at improving access roads and essential facilities in parts of Abuja.
The announcement was made by Mr. Richard Dauda, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), during a press briefing held in Abuja on Tuesday, following the 14th meeting of the committee, chaired by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Dauda revealed that one of the approved contracts is for the construction of access roads in the Durumi District. The project, located near the Apostolic Church in Durumi, will cover approximately 1.7 kilometres and include the construction of access roads, drainage systems, and culverts to enhance mobility and reduce flooding in the area.
Additionally, the committee approved another major project for the development of access roads and associated infrastructure in the Mabushi District. This project will focus on Kez Udezue Street and surrounding roads, incorporating the installation of underground drainage systems, street lighting, and essential utilities such as water and sewage systems.
In response to urgent environmental concerns, the committee also approved an emergency contract for erosion control. The erosion has threatened a critical water pipeline that transports water from the Lower Usuma Dam through Kubwa to Airport Road and on to Gwagwalada. Dauda stated that erosion had severely affected the pipeline, posing a significant risk to water supply in multiple areas.
To address the emergency, CGC Nigeria Ltd., a Chinese construction firm, was contracted to carry out immediate repairs. The committee’s approval formalised this emergency intervention.
Furthermore, the committee approved the complete renovation, furnishing, and technical upgrades of the Department of State Security (DSS) Headquarters. This project aims to enhance operational efficiency and modernise the agency’s facilities.
Also approved was the construction of a new block of Magistrate Court in Jabi, which is part of the broader strategy to strengthen the judicial infrastructure within the FCT.
Earlier in the meeting, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Mr. Chidi Amadi, disclosed that a total of 13 proposals were presented for consideration. Of these, nine were reviewed and approved by the committee.
Amadi emphasised that the approved projects are designed to accelerate infrastructural development and contribute to the overall enhancement of the capital city’s environment and public services.
