The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has witnessed a significant escalation in violence, with Israeli forces bombarding Gaza and killing at least 73 people since midnight. A devastating attack on a displacement shelter in Gaza City resulted in 22 fatalities, including children. The leaders of Canada, France, and the UK have condemned Israel’s actions, warning that they will take “concrete action” if the renewed offensive in Gaza does not cease.

In response to the international community’s concerns, 22 countries have urged Israel to allow aid into the besieged enclave. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed these calls, pledging to press on with the offensive, which includes plans for Israel to take control of the entire Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Health Ministry reports that Israel’s war on Gaza has resulted in at least 53,573 Palestinian fatalities and 121,688 injuries. The Government Media Office has updated the death toll to over 61,700, with thousands of people missing under the rubble presumed dead. In contrast, an estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, with over 200 taken captive.

Meanwhile, pro-Palestinian protests have been met with force in other parts of the world. At Utrecht University, Dutch police raided a protest camp set up by students, resulting in violent clashes and 49 arrests for trespassing. The protesters were demanding that the university cut ties with Israeli companies and institutions. The camp was named in honor of Al Jazeera journalist Hossam Shabat, who was killed by Israel in a targeted strike.

The escalating violence in Gaza has sparked widespread international concern, with the conflict resulting in significant human suffering and loss of life. UN experts have condemned the onslaught of violence against Palestinians in Gaza, particularly against women and children, who are among the most exposed to danger in this conflict. As of April 29, 2024, 34,488 Palestinians had been killed, including 14,500 children and 9,500 women, with 77,643 injured, 75% of whom were female.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is further exacerbated by Israel’s control over aid entry, with 22 countries urging Israel to allow aid into the besieged enclave. Oxfam reports that before the recent escalation, 80% of Gaza’s population relied on humanitarian aid for survival, highlighting the dire need for sustained support. The international community’s call for dialogue and an immediate ceasefire aims to protect civilian lives and facilitate humanitarian assistance.²
